No. D-221604/lEC/NOTTOi23-MS 11th July,2025 Dear Colleague, As you may be aware, a huge gap exisls between patients who require organ transplants and the availability of organ donors in lndia. There is a need to promote organ donation from deceased persons to take care of such huge requirement of organs in the country. Organs are best donated from "brain stem dead" persons. One deceased donor after brain stem death, can donate 2 Kidneys, 2 Lungs, Liver, Heart, lntestine and Pancreas, thus potentially saving upto 8 lives. ln addition, tissues like comea, skin, bone, heart valves etc c€n also be donated which can improve lhe quality of life of many others. The tissues can also be donated after natural/cardiac death usuailv within 6 hours of death- 2. Strengthening of the healthcare systems to facilitating organ donation and transplantation is one of the top priorities of the Government. Hon'ble Prime Minister has highlighted the importance of organ donation in his H;I tDt dkl programme, which has given impetus to the organ donation in tfre country. Organ donation is a noble act that offers hope and new lease of life to those suffering from the end-stage organ fa ilu res. 3.
