Noida Special Economic Zone (NSEZ), the only Central Government SEZ in northern India, headed by the Development Commissioner, was set up in 1985 in Noida Phase- I l on a 310 -a cre plot of land. The jurisdiction of NSEZ is spread over all SEZs and Export Oriented Units (EOUs) in seven states namely Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and three Union Territories of Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. There are 34 SEZs under the jurisdiction of NSEZ.

During 2020 -2 1 total exports of goods and services from the NSEZ has been Rs.7,067 crores, employment generated is 40,061 & number of operational units are 286. For the SEZs under the jurisdiction of NSEZ, the total exports were Rs 71,561 crores and employment generated was 396,523 in 2020 -2 1.

SEZs are engines of economic growth and prosperity with the broad guidelines being the:

• i. generation of additional economic activity ii. creation of employment opportunities iii. promotion of exports of goods and services iv. development of infrastructure facilities v. promotion of investment from domestic and foreign sources

Any individual, co - operative society, company, partnership firm or trusteeship can file an application for setting up of Special Economic Zone. An SEZ other than that of IT/ITES, Biotech or Health (other than hospital) service, shall have a contiguous land area of 50 hectares or more. However, for SEZs in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura Sikkim and Uttarakhand, as well asin a Union Territory, the area shall be atleast 25 hectares.

However, for an SEZ in IT/ITES, Biotech or Health (other than hospital) services, there is a criteria of minimum buil t- up processing area of 50000 sq. metres for 'Category A' cities (4 metros, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune), 25000 sq. metres for 'Category B' cities (fifteen in number) and 15000 sq. metres for 'Category C' cities. The processing area in any SEZ should be atleast 50% of its total area.
