Sub: Withdrawal of Revised Guidelines for determination of Critical Wildlife Habitats.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests vide letter of even no. dated 7% February 2011, had circulated the revised guidelines with respect to determination of Critical Wildlife Habitats. However, members of some civil society organizations made representations to the Ministry that some technical, scientific, social and ecological issues related to the process of identification and notification of Critical Wildlife Habitats and the consequent process of relocation of people from such areas requiredto be fine tuned to make it perfectly compliant to the provisions of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.

The Ministry organized a meeting with the officers of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, State/UT Governments and the representatives of scientific and civil society organizations on 4" March 2011 to'discuss the revised guidelines.

Taking a note of their concerns, the Ministry has decided to withdraw the guidelines issued on 7" February 2011, and has initiated the process for having new guidelines in place.
