01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 26,95,130 companies were registered in the country as on 31st May 2024, of which 64% (17,18,368) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.12% in the total proportion of active companies w.r.t registered companies when compared to April 2024. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 96% of the total companies with 38% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (4%) but comprise 62% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (28%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (12%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

*CP&S - Community, Personal and Social Services, *Agri & Allied - Agriculture and Allied Activities, *RE&R - Real Estate and Renting, *TS&C – Transport, Storage and Communications, *EG&WS - Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Companies, *M&Q - Mining and Quarrying Amongst the 37 States/UT, Maharashtra (19%) continues to be the state with highest number of Active Companies, followed by Delhi (14%) and West Bengal (8%). An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as compared to April 2024. Among the Union territories, Jammu and Kashmir showed a rise of 148 number of companies in contrast to April 2024. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in May 2024
New Registration of Companies A total of 16,076 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 1,142.98 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 15,939 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 1,142.73 Crore, 137 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (27%) followed by Trading (16%) and Manufacturing and Business Services (15%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during April 2024 were Maharashtra with 17% which amounts to 2,690 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,835 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,486 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 319.49 crores. (Table 7)

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In May 2024, 39,706 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in May 2024, 67% were male and the remaining 33% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 42% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 31st May 2024, a total number of 57,456 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 763.77 Crore.
During May 2024, a total number of 1042 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 8.34 Crore.

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 16,743 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter March 2024 to May 2024, a total number of 3,36,084 LLPs were active in the country as of 31st May 2024. (Table 9 & 10)

*CP&S - Community, Personal and Social Services, *Agri & Allied - Agriculture and Allied Activities, *RE&R - Real Estate and Renting, *TS&C – Transport, Storage and Communications, *EG&WS - Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Companies, *M&Q - Mining and Quarrying About 82% of active LLPs (2,75,729 in number) have an obligation of contribution less than or equal to Rs. 5 lakhs, and only about 4% (12,698 in number) of LLPs have the obligation of contribution above Rs.1 crore. (Table 10) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st May 2024 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 1.87% respectively. (Table 11)

06 Foreign Company

As on 31st May 2024, there were a total of 5,183 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 63% (3,287) were Active. Of the 18 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during March 2024-May 2024, 33% were established in Delhi, 22% in Maharashtra, 11% each in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Haryana and 6% each in Assam and Uttar Pradesh. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 56% of the companies can be classified as 'Community, Personal and social services’. (Table 12)
