01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 26,63,016 companies were registered in the country as on 31st March 2024, of which 64% (16,91,495) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.10% in the total proportion of active companies w.r.t registered companies when compared to February 2024. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 96% of the total companies with 39% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (4%) but comprise 61% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Service has highest number of Active companies (28%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as compared to February 2024. Among the Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir showed a rise of 129 number of companies in contrast to February 2024. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in March 2024
New Registration of Companies during FY 23-24 During the FY 2023-24 (i.e., from 1st April, 2023 to 31st March, 2024), a total of 1,85,312 companies were registered with the collective Paid Up capital of Rs 30,927.40 crore. Out of them 1,84,014 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with paid up capital of Rs. 30,923.17 crores; 1,298 companies Limited by Guarantees with Paid Up capital of Rs. 4.23 crores (Table-5). It is observed that 22% of companies were registered with the Paid Up capital of less than 1 lakh during the year. (Table-6) Sector–wise data reveals that Service Sector (71%) continues to account for the maximum share of new companies followed by Industry (23%) and Agriculture (6%). Broader Economic-Activity-wise classification reveals that Community, personal and Social Services observed the highest rise of 11% in the Service Sector as compared with FY 2022-23 (Table-7). State-wise analysis of new registered companies during the FY 2023-24 depicts that 17.6% companies were registered in Maharashtra, followed by 11.1% in Uttar Pradesh and 9.2% in Delhi. Union Territory Jammu & Kashmir have 1,433 companies registered during the F.Y 23-24 (Table 8).

New Registration of Companies during March A total of 16,597 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 846.07 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 16,480 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 845.72 Crore, 117 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 09) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (27%) followed by Trading (16%) Manufacturing (15%) and Business Services (15%). (Table 10) .

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during March 2024 were Maharashtra with 19% which amounts to 3,073 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 10% coming in at 1,655 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,505 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 223.37 crores. (Table 11)

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In March 2024, 42,041 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in March 2024, 67% were male and the remaining 33% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 43% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 31st March 2024, a total number of 55,687 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 744.66 Crore.
During March 2024, a total number of 1073 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 8.46 Crore.
Out of total Active number of One Person companies registered in March 2024 34% were registered under the head Community, personal & Social Services. (Table 12)

05 Limited Liability Partnership

With an increase of new 16,459 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter January 2024 to March 2024, a total number of 3,25,789 LLPs were active in the country as of 31st March 2024. (Table 13 & 14)

About 82% of active LLPs (2,66,827 in number) have an obligation of contribution less than or equal to Rs. 5 lakhs, and only about 4% (12,397 in number) of LLPs have the obligation of contribution above Rs.1 crore. (Table 14) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st March 2024 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 2% respectively. 06 Foreign Company

As on 31st March 2024, there were a total of 5,164 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,288) were Active. Of the 13 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during January 2024-March 2024, 23% each were established in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and 8% each in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand . When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 31% of the companies can be classified as 'Community, personal and Social Services’. (Table 16)
