01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 26,46,338 companies were registered in the country as on 29th February 2024, of which 63% (16,78,247) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.06% in the total proportion of active companies w.r.t registered companies when compared to January 2024. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 96% of the total companies with 39% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (4%) but comprise 61% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (28%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana as compared to January 2024. Among the Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir showed a rise of 133 number of companies in contrast to January 2024. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in February 2024
New Registration of Companies A total of 17,264 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 984.44 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 17,119 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 984.17 Crore, 145 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (27%) followed by Trading (16%) and Manufacturing (15%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during February 2024 were Maharashtra with 18% which amounts to 3,038 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,890 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,543 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 340.56 crores. (Table 7)

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In February 2024, 43,121 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in February 2024, 66% were male and the remaining 34% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 44% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 29th February 2024, a total number of 54,768 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 733.70 Crore.
During February 2024, a total number of 1,031 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 8.35 Crore.

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 16,126 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter Dec 2023 to Feb 2024, a total number of 3,21,367 LLPs were active in the country as of 29th February 2024. (Table 9 & 10)

*CP&S - Community, Personal and Social Services, *Agri & Allied - Agriculture and Allied Activities, *RE&R - Real Estate and Renting, *TS&C – Transport, Storage and Communications, *EG&WS - Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Companies, *M&Q - Mining and Quarrying About 82% of active LLPs (2,63,063 in number) have an obligation of contribution less than or equal to Rs. 5 lakhs, and only about 4% (12,245 in number) of LLPs have the obligation of contribution above Rs.1 crore. (Table 10) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 29th February 2024 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 2% respectively. (Table 11)

06 Foreign Company

As on 29th February 2024, there were a total of 5,160 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,290) were Active. Of the 14 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during Dec 2023- Feb 2024, 43% were established in Delhi, 14% each in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka, and 7% each in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 29% of the companies can be classified as 'Community, Personal and social services’. (Table 12)
