01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 26,28,865 companies were registered in the country as on 31st January 2024, of which 63% (16,65,438) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.15% in the total proportion of active companies w.r.t registered companies when compared to December 2023. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 96% of the total companies with 37% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (4%) but comprise 63% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (28%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as compared to December 2023. Among the Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir showed a rise of 119 number of companies in contrast to December 2023. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in January 2024
New Registration of Companies A total of 14,327 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 1,133.96 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 14,204 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 1,133.82 Crore, 123 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (27%) followed by Trading, Manufacturing and Business Services (15%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during January 2024 were Maharashtra with 18% which amounts to 2,615 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,572 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,312 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 349.62 crores. (Table 7)

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In January 2024, 38,325 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in January 2024, 68% were male and the remaining 32% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 43% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 31st January 2024, a total number of 54,212 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 686.53 Crore.
During January 2024, a total number of 851 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 6.78 Crore.

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 15,048 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter Nov 2023 to Jan 2024, a total number of 3,16,402 LLPs were active in the country as of 31st January 2024. (Table 9 & 10)

(Table 10) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st January 2024 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 2% respectively. (Table 11)

06 Foreign Company

As on 31st January 2024, there were a total of 5,157 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,296) were Active. Of the 22 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during Nov 2023- Jan 2024, 41% were established in Delhi, 23% in Maharashtra, 9% each in Gujarat and Uttarakhand, and 5% each in Haryana, Karnataka, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 45% of the companies can be classified as 'Community, Personal and social services’. (Table 12)
