01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 26,14,242 companies were registered in the country as on 31st December 2023, of which 63% (16,52,249) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.11% in the total proportion of active companies w.r.t registered companies when compared to November 2023. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 96% of the total companies with 37% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (4%) but comprise 63% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (28%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka as compared to November 2023. Among the Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir showed a rise of 106 number of companies in contrast to November 2023. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in December 2023
New Registration of Companies A total of 14,806 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 4,667.34 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 14,702 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 4,667.24 Crore, 104 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (28%) followed by Business Service and Trading (15%) and Manufacturing (14%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during December 2023 were Maharashtra with 17% which amounts to 2,573 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,671 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,338 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 4,233.79 crores. (Table 7)

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In December 2023, 36,974 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in December 2023, 68% were male and the remaining 32% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 43% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 31st December 2023, a total number of 53,386 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 679.23 Crore.
During December 2023, a total number of 928 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 6.81 Crore.
Out of total Active number of One Person companies registered in December 2023 33% were registered under the head Community, personal & Social Services. (Table 8) Active OPC as on December 2023

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 14,865 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter Oct 2023 to Dec 2023, a total number of 3,11,660 LLPs were active in the country as of 31st December 2023. (Table 9 & 10)

*CP&S - Community, Personal and Social Services, *Agri & Allied - Agriculture and Allied Activities, *RE&R - Real Estate and Renting, *TS&C – Transport, Storage and Communications, *EG&WS - Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Companies, *M&Q - Mining and Quarrying About 82% of active LLPs (2,54,720 in number) have an obligation of contribution less than or equal to Rs. 5 lakhs, and only about 4% (11,923 in number) of LLPs have the obligation of contribution above Rs.1 crore. (Table 10) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st December 2023 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 2% respectively. (Table 11)

06 Foreign Company

As on 31st December 2023, there were a total of 5,151 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,292) were Active. Of the 22 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during Oct 2023- Dec 2023, 45% were established in Delhi, 23% in Maharashtra, 9% in Haryana and 5% each in Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 68% of the companies can be classified as 'Community, Personal and social services’. (Table 12)
