01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 25,70,788 companies were registered in the country as on 30th Sep 2023, of which 63% (16,14,128) companies stands active. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 95% of the total companies with 37% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (5%) but comprise 63% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2).

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (29%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Business Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka as compared to August 2023. Among the Union territories, Chandigarh showed a rise of 28 number of companies in contrast to August 2023. (Table 4).

03 New Registration in September 2023
New Registration of Companies A total of 13,995 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 1,868.22 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 13,885 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 1,868.07 Crore, 110 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (27%) followed by Business Services (16%), Trading (15%) and Manufacturing (14%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during September 2023 were Maharashtra with 17% which amounts to 2,352 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 12% coming in at 1,642 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,270 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs 1105.78 crores.

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In Sep 2023 39,162 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in September 2023, 68.42 % were male and the remaining 31.58% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 43% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old, of which, 41.58 % were male and 46.32% female. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 30th September 2023, a total number of 50,819 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 659.34 Crore.
During September 2023, a total number of 874 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 6.63 Crore.
Out of total Active number of One Person companies registered in September 2023 31% were registered under the head Community, personal & Social Services. (Table 8)

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 13,904 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter July 2023 to September 2023, a total number of 2,97,254 LLPs were active in the country as of 30th September 2023. (Table 9 & 10)

*CP&S - Community, Personal and Social Services, *Agri & Allied - Agriculture and Allied Activities, *RE&R - Real Estate and Renting, *TS&C – Transport, Storage and Communications, *EG&WS - Electricity, Gas and Water Supply Companies, *M&Q - Mining and Quarrying About 81.51% of active LLPs (2,42,294 in number) have an obligation of contribution less than or equal to Rs. 5 lakhs, and only about 3.88% (11,530 in number) of LLPs have the obligation of contribution above Rs.1 crore. (Table 10) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 30th September 2023 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74.22% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 23.81% and 1.96% respectively. (Table 11)

06 Foreign Company

As on 30th September 2023, there were a total of 5,128 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,281) were Active. Of the 6 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during July 2023- Sep 2023, 50% was established in Maharashtra followed by 17% in Delhi, Gujarat each and 16% in Telangana. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 50% of the companies can be classified as ‘Community, personal and Social Services’. (Table 12)
