01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 25,56,823 companies were registered in the country as on 30th Aug 2023, of which 63% (16,06,726) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.20% in the total number of active companies as compared to July 2023. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 95% of the total companies with 36% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (5%) but comprise 64% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (29%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (11%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Business Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

Among the Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir showed a rise of 119 number of companies in contrast to July 2023. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in Aug 2023
New Registration of Companies A total of 15,317 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 1,345 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 15,216 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 1,344 Crore, 101 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (26%) followed by Trading & Business Services (16%) and Manufacturing (14%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during August 2023 were Maharashtra with 18% which amounts to 2,706 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,679 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,419 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs 711 crores.

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In Aug 2023 39,932 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in August 2023, 68.74% were male and the remaining 31.23% were female and 0.017% were transgender. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 43% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old, of which, 41.54% were male and 46.85%female. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 31st August 2023, a total number of 50,035 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 653 Crore.
During August 2023, a total number of 923 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 7.66 Crore.
Out of total Active number of One Person companies registered in August 2023 33% were registered under the head Community, personal & Social Services. (Table 8)

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 13,216 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter June 2023 to August 2023, a total number of 2,92,893 LLPs were active in the country as of 31st August 2023. (Table 9 & 10)

(Table 10) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st August 2023 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 2% respectively. (Table 11)

06 Foreign Company

As on 31st August 2023, there were a total of 5,128 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,281) were Active. Of the 21 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during June 2023- Aug 2023, 29% was established in Delhi followed by 24% in Maharashtra, 19% in Gujarat and 14% in Tamil Nadu. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 52% of the companies can be classified as ‘Community, personal and Social Services’. (Table 12)
