01 Overview of the Corporate Sector

A total number of 25,41,646 companies were registered in the country as on 31st July 2023, of which 63% (15,92,168) companies stands active. There is increase of 0.18% in the total number of active companies as compared to June 2023. (Table 1) Private limited companies account for 95% of the total companies with 37% of the total Paid-up Capital. In comparison, Public Limited companies are smaller in number (5%) but comprise 63% of the total Paid-up Capital. (Table 2)

Economic Sector-wise classification (NIC-2004) reveals that the Business Services has been has highest number of Active companies (29%) followed by Manufacturing (20%), Trading (13%) and Community, Personal and Social Services (10%). It is also observed that Service Sector saw the maximum increase in the total number of Active Companies, followed by Industry Sector and Agriculture Sector. In the Service Sector, Community, personal & Social Services Sector showed the maximum rise in the number of Active Companies. (Table 3).

An increase in the number of Active Companies is witnessed in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as compared to June 2023. Among the Union territories, Jammu and Kashmir showed a rise of 133 number of companies in contrast to June 2023. (Table 4)

03 New Registration in July 2023
New Registration of Companies A total of 16,697 companies were registered with a collective Paid-up Capital of Rs. 1754.15 Crore. Out of the total new registrations, 16,601 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 1753.86 Crore, 96 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Guarantee. (Table 5) Economic-activity wise classification of new companies registered reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Community, personal & Social Services (26%) followed by Trading, Business Services (16%) each and Construction (6%). (Table 6)

State/UT-Wise Analysis of new registered companies shows that top three states that receive the highest number of new registrations during July 2023 were Maharashtra with 18% which amounts to 3,068 corporates, Uttar Pradesh with 11% coming in at 1,810 and Delhi following closely behind at 9% belonging to 1,541 companies with a collective paid-up capital of Rs. 585.27 crores. (Table 7)

New Registration of Director Identification Number (DIN)

In July 2023, 38,925 Director Identification Numbers were registered, out of the total number of directors registered in India in July 2023, 68% were male and the remaining 32% were female. A close analysis on Indian Directors revealed that 43% of new directors registered belongs to age 31-45 years old. Furthermore, 7% of the new director registrations were older than 60 years.

04 One Person Company

As on 31st July 2023, a total number of 49,146 One Person Companies were active with a collective Paid up capital of Rs. 644.89 Crore.
During July 2023, a total number of 898 One Person Companies were registered with a Paid-Up Capital of Rs. 8.09 Crore.
Out of total Active number of One Person companies registered in July 2023 32% were registered under the head Community, personal & Social Services. (Table 8)

05 Limited Liability Partnership
With an increase of new 14,300 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) during the quarter May 2023 to July 2023, a total number of 2,88,224 LLPs were active in the country as of 31st July 2023. (Table 11 & 12)

(Table 12) Broader economic sector-wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st July 2023 reveals that the Service sector continues to account for maximum registrations with 74% LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 24% and 2% respectively. (Table 13)

06 Foreign Company

As on 31st July 2023, there were a total of 5,123 foreign companies registered in India. Out of these, 64% (3,276) were Active. Of the 20 new overseas business entities that were registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs during May 2023- July 2023, 25% were established in Delhi, 20% in Maharashtra, 15% each in Gujarat & Tamil Nadu. When looking at the economic activity classification, it was revealed that 60% of the companies can be classified as 'Community, Personal and social services’. (Table 14)
