I. REGISTERED COMPANIES AS ON 31ST DECEMBER, 2021
The total number of companies registered in the country as on 31st December, 2021 stood at 2276448. Of them 787953 companies were closed. 2355 companies were assigned dormant status as per the Companies Act, 2013; 7014 were under liquidation; 34554 companies were in the process of being struck-off. Active in progress status is now invalid and companies under this category, lies under Active Status. Taking the above into account, there were 1444572 active companies as on 31st December, 2021. 1. Out of the 787953 closed companies, 11152 companies were liquidated/dissolved; 727081 companies were declared defunct (and hence struck-off after issuance of notice u/s 248). 28370 companies were amalgamated/ merged with other companies; 16474 companies were converted to Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) and 4876 were converted to LLP and dissolved. Table-1.1 presents the summary picture of companies count as on 31st December, 2021.
Out of the 1444572 active companies, 1435106 were limited by shares; 9160 were limited by guarantee and 306 were unlimited companies. Out of the companies limited by shares, 67606 were public, 1367500 were private including 43126 one person companies. Among the public limited companies, 6756 were listed (Table 1.2).

State/UT-wise distribution of registered companies indicates that Maharashtra has the highest number of companies (444827), followed by Delhi (374689) and West Bengal (220035). Amongst ‘Active Companies’, Maharashtra has the maximum number of active companies (279223), followed by Delhi (226062) and West Bengal (137241) as on 31st December, 2021. (Table-1.3).
Economic-activity wise classification of active companies reveals that highest number of companies were in Business Services (448245) followed by Manufacturing (293642), Trading (184571) and Community, Personal and Social Services (121792). Business Services comprise of Information Technology, Research & Development and other business activities such as law, audit & accounts and consultancy, etc. (Table- 1.4 and Chart 1.1).

‘M&Q’ is Mining & Quarrying, ‘TS&C’ is Transport, Storage and Communication, and ‘CP&S is Community, Personal & Social Services, ‘RE&R’ is Real Estate and Renting, ’EG&WS’, is Electricity Gas & Water Supply. 13,889 active companies (Others) are having invalid Economic Activity (NIC-2004) Code.
II. ONE PERSON COMPANY
Up to 31st December, 2021, a total number of 43126 One Person Companies (OPCs) were registered with collective authorized capital of Rs. 1,459.66 crore. Economic activity wise classification of OPCs up to 31st December reveals that the highest number of OPCs were in Business Services (21033) followed by Manufacturing (5744), Community, Personal & Social Services (5447) and Trading (5343) (Chart 2.1). During the month of December, 2021, a total of 811 OPCs were registered with authorized capital of Rs. 33.63 crore. Economic activity wise classification of OPC during the month reveals that highest number of 309 OPCs were registered in Business Services, followed by 146 in Manufacturing, 133 in Trading, and 88 in Community, Personal & Social Services. (Table 2.1).

III. TREND OF REGISTRATION OF NEW COMPANIES
An analysis of registration of new companies during December 2019 to December 2021 indicates that monthly registration of companies has increased after hitting lowest of 3209 Companies in April 2020 (Chart 3.1). A total of 13311 companies were registered in December, 2021 as compared to 14358 in December 2020. A decrease (7.05%) in registration of companies has been witnessed in December 2021 over the previous month (Table 3.1). A total of 3859 LLPs were registered in December 2021 as compared to 4322 LLPs in December 2020 (Table 3.1).

IV. REGISTRATION OF NEW COMPANIES DURING DECEMBER, 2021
During the month of December 2021, a total of 13311 companies were registered with collective authorized capital of Rs. 3,164.19 crore. Of them 13224 companies were registered as Companies Limited by Shares with authorized capital of Rs. 3,162.43 crore; (Table-4.1).
Economic-activity wise classification of companies registered during December 2021 (Table-4.2 and Chart 4.1) reveals that the predominant share of companies is in Business Services (3508) followed by Manufacturing (2686), Community, personal & Social Services (1772), Trading (1588) and Agriculture and Allied Activities (1053).

During December, 2021, 2448 (18.39%) companies were registered in Maharashtra, followed by 1361 (10.22%) in Uttar Pradesh and 1258 (9.45%) in Delhi. (Table-4.3).
V. Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) 10. As on 31st December 2021, a total number of 232829 LLPs were active in the country. About 84.06% active LLPs (195711 in number) have obligation of contribution less than or equal to Rs. 5 lakh each; and only about 3.10% (7225 in number) of LLPs have obligation of contribution above Rs.1 crore each (Table-5.1 and Chart 5.1)

Broad economic sector wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st December 2021 reveals that Service sector account for 172811 LLPs, followed by Industry and Agriculture sectors accounting for 55176 and 4841 respectively. Economic-activity wise classification of active LLPs as on 31st December 2021 further reveals that a large number of LLPs are in Business Services (80591) followed by Trading (38985), Manufacturing (32185) and Community, Personal and Social Services (22538) (Table-5.2 & Chart 5.2).

During October to December 2021, a total of 12355 Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) were registered with collective obligation of contribution of Rs. 1,704.34 crore. Economic activity wise classification of LLPs during October to December 2021 indicates that highest number of 3206 LLPs were registered in Business Services followed by 2339 in Trading, 1983 in Manufacturing and 1373 in Real Estate and Renting. (Table 5.3 and Chart 5.3).

VI. Foreign Companies 13. As on 31st December 2021, a total of 5035 foreign companies were registered in India, of which 3311 were active. During October to December, 2021, a total of 20 foreign companies were registered in India, 7 in Delhi, 6 in Maharashtra, 3 in Karnataka, 2 in Haryana and 1 each in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Economic activity wise classification of foreign companies reveals that highest number of 14 were registered in Business Services followed by 1 each in Manufacturing, Construction, Trading, Mining & Quarrying, Transport, Storage & Communications and Electricity, Gas & Water Supply Companies (Table 6.1 and Chart 6.1).
VII. MISCELLANEOUS 14. During December 2021, a total of 173231 forms were filed. Of which, 77921 ADT-1 forms were filed, followed by 40174 for DIR-12, 22106 for MGT-14 and 6818 for INC-22 (Table 8.1 and Chart 8.1)

Analysis of new registration of DIN (Director Identification Number) indicates that during the month of December' 2021, a total number of 34929 DINs were registered, out of which 33288 stands Active. Out of the 33288 active DINs, 32604 belongs to Indian Nationals whereas remaining 684 belongs to Foreign Nationals. A total of 163 Indian National DINs and 3 Foreign National DINs were de -registered during the month. (Table 8.2 and Chart 8.2).

During December 2021, Ministry of Corporate Affairs have removed 24 companies’ names from register of companies’ u/s 248. A total of 1452 applications were received by companies to strike off its names from the register (Table 8.3).
MCA facilitates its registered users to login and view/download all the forms filed by the company. In December 2021, 355695 were viewed/downloaded by the users.
In December 2021, a total of 148624 Non STP forms that are subject to review by the approving official, before being accepted by MCA, were received. Of which, 145857 (98%) were processed and 2767 (2%) were rejected (Table 8.5 and Chart 8.3).
68 public companies were converted to private companies and 35 private companies were converted to public companies in December 2021. Further, 16 companies each were converted from Unlisted to Listed and Listed to Unlisted respectively.
